OBI Thwarts Midlife Crisis Comeback to Earn Split

6-4 OBI remains in 5th Place after a hard fought 15-13 victory in Game 2 over 7-3 Midlife Crisis (currently tied for 3rd place) was just the remedy for OBI's ills of late. Finding ourselves down 11-12 going to the 7th inning, the offense put up four runs with solid hitting and good base running to cap the night. And then the defense held up to secure the 2 run win.

The Game 2 win came after a second consecutive dismal offensive outing as we were run ruled 2-12 in Game 1. Even with the 2 runs on 4 hits in the first inning, OBI went two games (10 innings at the plate) by collecting 11 hits and scoring just the two runs... And guess what? We lost both games... Maybe this offense is the best defense is not just a conspiracy theory...

Game 2's offensive effort was exactly what the doctor ordered, especially after learning Spillane may be lost for a while. The ball was jumping off the bats of Matt, Jayse, Larry, and others. If only the new ASA Louisville Slugger would have been squared up,,, we would have seen Paul rocket one deep ...

Good news for the team... Larry and Michael have decided to play next Thursday,,, and will leave for Vegas and the 2013 LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters Championships ,,, AFTER the OBI games next Thursday, October 3rd, at 8:15/9:15 on Field #2 ...

One Drunk Game from Competing with Just Show Up ...

After drubbing Far From Limpin' with a 17-7 tally, One Bad Inning turned into a pumpkin and collected 4 hits in game 2 vs. Just Show Up losing 0-11 ...

Ok,,, so, split double headers are not our specialty. However, folks like,,, ohhhh, I don't know,,, MICHAEL ,,, prolly should say No after the Nth beer LOL ... Having swung well in game 1 and swung through the pitch on my first at bat of game 2... I was simply happy it was the first strike...

Anyways,,, enough about myself, let's talk about Game 1... We didn't score in the second inning, but scored 17 in the other four at bats... Whew... Okay, still hung over... I am out ...

Here are both the mid-season 5 and YTD Stats ...

Mamma's Boys Whooped after OBI's One Bad Inning ...

OBI earned a doubleheader split with a 17-9 victory in Game 2 that included a happy, happy, happy 12-run inning. This after Mamma's Boys turn a 6th inning Game 1 12-6 deficit into a 16-12 victory with their own 10 run inning. Grrrrrrrrr

The story of the evening was improved and more consistent offense by the OBI crew, better base running, and other wonderful crap like that. We hit the ball on a line more often than the past few weeks. This is a good trend as popups and lazy fly balls seem to be easier to catch than sharply hit grounders and line drives. I like it!!!

Game 1 featured an 8-run third inning where Shylo's hit the second time around kept him from making the first and third outs of the inning. There were a few gifts by Mamma's Boys, but for the most part the OBI crew singled them to death and we put ourselves in good position to win. Alas, it didn't last...

In Game 2, we scored 5 runs in the top of the first,, then 12 in the 4th inning. This was enough to pull away far enough to secure the victory. Officially,,, Larry, Michael (also had a SacFly), Spillane, Matt, and Jayse all made only one out over both games.

Extra base hits were more abundant, possibly due to their 3 OFs (at times) and/or Field 4's generous grazing area. Simply said, we hit well as a team and are becoming consistent as we have been in previous seasons. Keep it rockin' folks ...

One Bad Inning in Game 1 Costs OBI a Split-DH Sweep ...

OBI gave up 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th to Chico's Bail Bonds and fell 10-13 in Game 1 on Thursday night. Consistency being the unrequited brother's mistress of valor, OBI pushed across another 10 runs in game 2 against the AZ Tea Bags (no comment placed here) to take the contest 10-5 ...

Against Chico's Bail Bonds, OBI jumped out to 5-0, 8-3, then 10-5 leads,,, we would score no more runs in the game. OBI scored 8 in the first 3 innings, and only 2 over the last 4 at bats... Ya, the offense went cold.

Game 1 leaders with 3 hits each were Humberto (3-3) and both Matt & Michael (at 3-4). Matt scored 3 runs and Humberto drove in a run with each of his hits, all with 2 outs ...

Game 2 was all about the top of the order. Ryan (2-3), Humberto (3-4), and Shylo (2-3) collected 8 hits (rest of the team 9) and scored 7 of the 10 runs... Paul drove in 3 runs as the team leader this game.

The real difference in Game 1's loss and Game 2's win was the Defense... A few misplayed balls in the first game contributed to Chico's big bad inning. Since we are human, I like to think these things are going to happen whether aliens have truly visited planet Earth,,, or not ...

Overall, our good play continues and with Spillane back next week we should be able to give some players more time to get me a beer between innings... Or other important stuff like that...

Hard Earned Sweep of Dilligafs Helps OBI Start 2-0 in Season 5

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly were fully on display during last nights double header with Dilligafs. Oh, I looked up the team name and find it is an acronym for ,,, Do I Look Like I Give A F*ck? ,,, but I digress ...

The Good: One Bad Inning played loose and overcame deficits in both games winning 11-10 and 16-13 ...

The Bad: Dilligafs scored 11 runs combined in the first inning of the two games... They lead 4-0 heading to the top of the first inning in Game 1 and 7-0 after one inning in game 1 (9-0 after two innings) ...

The Ugly: Nuta's swing... 'Nuff Said ... (No offense)

OBI showed up big both offensively and defensively last night ... There were big plays in the field throughout both games with the highlight being a relayed throw from Juan to Shylo in the top of the last inning in Game 1 where the tag was made to preserve an 11-10 victory.

Game 2 highlight was the 10 run top of the 3rd inning that gave OBI a 10-9 lead that we built upon in the 4th inning to move from down 9-0 to up 14-9... Mind you, Dilligafs did their best to accommodate our offense,,, and we will take it...

One Bad Inning will be missing DC, Ricky, and after week 1, Juan for Season 5. We have added Jayse and JR full time and welcome back Humberto into the fold... This weeks victories were all about team work ... Keep up the good work, boiz !!!

Here are the stats for Week 1:

At 7:15 on Field #5 is the when and where #6 seed OBI starts the Season 4 Tourney ascent towards the title. Our opponent, #11 seed Midlife Crisis, is a friendly enemy whom we did not play this season. Let's bring the battle to them ...

Warning Track Power Shut Out 13-0 by OBI in battle for 6th Seed...

After taking it on the chin ~9-2 in Game 1,,, One Bad Inning came back in game 2 to down Warning Track Power in fine fashion 13-0... The win in the final game of Season 4's Regular Season gives the OBI crew the 6th Seed in next weeks tournament... Warning Track Power garnishes the 7th seed...

OBI's most likely first-round 11th Seed opponents are Mamma's Boys (who swept us a few weeks ago by a two-game total score of 17-10), Chico's Bail Bonds, or Aero FCU Skeleton Crew...

Look for more information next week once Clint and I meet up and I get the scorebook in my hands...

Speaking of scorebook,,, my apologies for taking so long to get the excel file converted to fit more players. That said, following are the Season 4 stats thru Week 6 ... The numbers looked a little weak prior to our offensive explosion in Week 6 ...

See y'all for the tourney ... And don't forget to bring Season 5 monies next week !!!

Three Weeks Later ,,, One Bad Inning's Blog gets a post following Sweep of 12 Deep ... In the Meantime,,,

July 25th ... Just Show Up took two from OBI by the scores of 11-10 and 17-6 ...

Game 1 was a slow burner as OBI was down 9-4 going into the top of the 6th scoring 3 in each of the last two innings to bring the final tally to 10-11. Interestingly, not one extra-base hit was counted in the score book. Larry led the way with 4 hits while Jayse dropped 3 hits of his own.

The second game was all JSU... OBI's offense was a no show tallying only 6 runs in the 5 frames. Spillane and KC both raked 3 hits a piece as OBI completed a full evening of fun with zero extra base hits. Hmmmmmm...

August 1st ... Mamma's Boys take two from OBI by the scores of 9-8 and 4-8.

Game 1's first at bat provided OBI with what was missing last week. Jayse laced a Triple into Left and we were off to the races. Ok, actually, we only scored 8 runs but that is better than Game 2. Spillane, Michael, and Larry all stroked it for 3 hits. Jayse and Larry also tallied 3 RBIs.

Game 2 was ,,, **cricket spoiler alert** ,,, quiet, bat-wise ... Juan collected 3 of the 15 total hits in the game. Meaning, the other 10 players collected only 12 hits of their own. Not extremely offensive to say the least. Michael scored 3 runs and Larry the other. Ricky had two (2) Sac Flies and Nuta one (1). Thus, the only hit that plated a run came off Juan's bat,,, go figure.

Michael sets a lofty goal for August 8th,,, score more in game 1 than we scored in both games on 8/1 ...

August 8th ... OBI Sweeps 12 Deep to improve to 5-7 with 13-7 and 19-0 wins...

Game 1's goal was met as OBI scored 13 runs in 5 at bats. Mind you,,, 12 Deep was very, ummm ,, accommodating. There were a handful of fly balls and maybe a few more ground balls that 12 Deep was unable to prevent the earth's gravitational pull from its appointed duties. However, OBI did the needful and took the game.

Matt and Clint both had 3 hits. This while all but 2 players reached base at least twice in the game. Four players had at least 2 RBIs. Riding the high,,, OBI hit first in Game 2...

OBI scored No Runs in the top of the 1st inning,,, cuz Game 2 was really about pitching and defense. In the first three innings, Larry tossed a total of 11 pitches... and I believe he gave up just one hit in the fourth inning with an estimate of 8-9 pitches,,, he still averaged about 5 pitches an inning.

Offensively, OBI scored 19 runs from the second thru fourth innings. Here are the highlights:

Clint 3-4 Double
KC 2-4 Double
Juan 4-4
Ricky 2-4
Ryan 1-3
Jayse 1-3 BB
JR 2-3
Larry 3-3
Michael 2-2 BB Double Triple
Matt 2-3
Nuta 2-3

Keep up the good work against Warning Track Power this week... Let's go into the Tourney at 7-7 ;~)

Awesome job this week OBIerz ...

By the way,,, Stats are up next...

Dusk Provides Golden Sunset and Opportunity to Get Back to .500

Early games this week vs. an old rival (Aero FCU Skeleton Crew) were won with good defense and enough timely hits to count. Final scores of 4-1 (yes, 5 total runs scored) and 15-3 pushed OBI back to .500 after 3 weeks of play in Season 4.

Game 1 was a 7 inning affair that remained tied 1-1 till the bottom of the 6th inning. OBI pushed across 3 huge runs to forge an insurmountable lead, to win 4-1. KC laced a 2-run Double scoring Matt and Spillane to break the 1-1 tie.

The only thing better than scoring 4 runs in a win is,,, holding your opponent to 1 run ,,, in a victory. There were excellent plays and some really good ones. Jayse made a full tilt diving catch, a beaut... Larry dodged a few outs hit sharply back thru the box and everyone made the plays that were needed.

To start Game 2, OBI scored 4 in the top of the 1st inning. Holding onto a 6-3 lead, we put up a 9 spot in the top of the 5th inning. Juan ripped 4 hits in the game with Ricky and Larry collecting 3 each. These 10 hits were at the top of the order for this game which kick started the anemic offense.

KC collected 2 more RBIs with yet another double... Annnnd, the new guy, Jayse, in Week 3 of Season 4 crushed one (down the left field line past the LF) and was able to circle the bases for OBI's first HR of the season. Only took 6 games,,, must be the heat...

This week, games are at 815/915 on Field 2 vs. Just Show Up... In fact, I do not recognize three of the teams we play over the next four weeks,,, new blood??? Let's show 'em our best...

p.s. I plan to add a new row for Jayse for Week 4 ...

OBI Roster Adds Two Sluggers ,,, and OBI Suffers Double Header Sweep ...

Congrats go out to 2 proud new OBI parents, DC and JR !!!

On Wednesday, joining the OBI family is 8 lb. 15 oz Kawika Kainoa Craycraft. It's pronounced Ka-vee-ka and KC informs us it is David in Samoan. Basically, just another name that I will not be able to say the first 1,200 times it rolls off my tongue...

JR got the call in the top of the 1st inning of Game 1 last night. Needless to say, he promptly headed home and by 11pm he sent out notice that Aaliyah Jayde Reeves arrived at 7 lbs 5 ozs. And once again, please see my note above concerning my name issues.

Both Beautiful Babies,, and B E A Uuuuuu Tee Fullll Names ...

Well, onto the less important stuff,,, OBI was swept by Murphy's Law last night 8-17 and 18-21 ... A pretty good showing considering 5 regulars were missing... Ok, 4 1/2,,, since Michael played in jeans and tennis shoes, played catcher and swung left-handed...

Game 1 saw the top 4 hitters in the lineup score 1 run (in the top of the 7th) while stroking it at a 4-16 pace. And 2 of those were in the 7th inning... However, Larry and Juan jump started the bottom half of the lineup to produce the bulk of our runs.

Game 2 was a back in forth battle with Murphy's Law scoring more late in the game to come out on top 21-18. Top to bottom, the lineup was productive with both Spillane and Michael collection 4 hits and 4 RBIs. Matt actually recorded a 2-Sac Fly game which along with his triple netted him 4 RBIs as well.

No Home Runs of any kind were raked this week by OBI. I anticipate this changing along with the winds as we move towards Monsoon Season 2013... Here are the stats for Season 4 thus far:

The Softball Gods Giveth and the Softball Gods Taketh Away ...

With our double header split this past Thursday, it is readily apparent that One Bad Inning and We All Paid are both generous, to a fault. We All Paid lost game 1 by a score of 1-14,,, and then OBI lost game 2 in another run rule, 3-13.

Of the 31 total runs scored by both teams, an estimated 20 to 2 dozen of the runs were unearned. Both Larry and David pitched well, Spillane was running crazy out in left center, and it took Matt a game and a half to get a ball out in left field. Juan snapped a ball to Michael for a force out at second base (after forgetting his fork he usually used to catch the ball), unfortunately, Larry needs a haircut and the Light Blue couldn't see the ball beat the runner to the bag...

In Game One we saw a few sparkling offensive moments, including Juan's line drive to deep left for a triple. He then had to run first to home in his next at bat. I was tired just watching him. The following inning, Juan was at the tail end of a 6-3-2 as he tagged out a would be run at the plate to end the inning. We All Paid was very generous defensively, giving up about 10 unearned runs...

Game Two was OBI's turn at extreme generosity. Dropped, kicked, and generally poorly thrown balls were on full display as a low scoring close game early became a bottom of the sixth inning 13-3...

No stats this week cuz there were just too many We All Paid issues that made us look decent. My favorite was Matt's one-hopper to the pitcher turned Double as the pitcher was unable to accurately overcome the ~45 foot of bare, infield flat lands with a toss to the WAP 1st Baseman.

Failure To Launch ... OBI drops to 0-5 in 2013 Season Tourney Play

I told Nuta to text me his desired blog post title, but he was more buzzed than I was after last night's festivities. Thus,, Failure To Launch seemed more than appropriate when OBI goes off for only 7 runs in our first tourney game...

Defense was a bright spot last night ... From Ryan's running catch to end the Audi threat in the first inning of Game 1 thru Spillane's 5-6 hole double-clutch cannon shot across the infield to get the batter-runner,,, there were many shining moments. That good news fades away when you take KC's pre-game comments into account, "I don't care where I play in the field, I get paid to hit"... (something like that anyways lol)

So, with that said... May I present a few interesting mid-2013 tidbits,,,

100th Double in 2013 -- Chris Spillane raked it during OBI's 10 Run 3rd Inning in Week 6's loss to Aero FCU Skeleton Crew 18-17...

1,000th OBI Player On Base in 2013 -- Michael Lee's 2 out Single during the 4th inning of last night's Game 2.

First to 100 Times On Base in 2013 -- Interestingly,, Michael Lee,,, same At Bat as above note...

17% of team accounts for 56% of the Base on Balls for OBI thus far in 2013 -- Yes, 35 of the 63 Walks have been taken by the top 2 walkers, Steve Sevec (15) and Michael Lee (20) ...

Looking Ahead at Upcoming Milestones:

1,000th OBI Hit in 2013 -- Should happen in Week 2 of Season 4 as we are currently at 945 ...

First to 100 Hits in 2013 -- KC (87) and Spillane (84) are battling to be the first to 100 ...

Again, Great Season 3 !!! We played well and welcomed back both DC and Juan ... Let's keep up the good work and build on our play during the second half of 2013...

Following are the Season 3 and 2013 YTD Stats:

10-4 OBI Earns #2 Seed in Season 3 Tournament ...

Though the schedule is not out quite yet, the League Standings thru Week 7 have been posted and 10-4 OBI assured itself #2 Seed and will most-likely play the winner of #10 Waste Management vs. #7 Audi North Scottsdale in the quarter finals of the upcoming Season 3 Tournament. Time and Field are yet TBD ...

For the first time in Season 3, there were three OBIers who missed time the same week. Clint's arm injury along with DC's over exhuberant physical therapist caused both to miss the games, though both attended. Matt missed and was not invited to attend,,, as he was a sicky ...

An interesting side note, this weeks games were the first Matt has missed in 2013. He was last player to miss time, last one who could have received a 2013 Perfect Attendance Record. Alas, we will have to wait until 2014 to try again...

Our fill in players were Dre' and Jayse. Dre' shined offensively and Jayse defensively. Both individuals contributed greatly towards the sweep of Audi. Though, in truth, as much as DC shown brightly last week,,, Steve stepped up in a big way in Week 7 ...

Steve set the tone with a 3-Run HR in the bottom of the first during Game 1 to help forge a 4-2 opening inning lead. This two out blast lead the way for the 7 Run 4th inning that came following the first two hitters of that inning making outs. The defense was strong and the offense consistent during the 16-10 victory.

Game Two's 19-14 win was a back and forth battle where a 5 Run Top of the 7th inning turned out to be the difference.  Again, Steve led the offense with a 3rd inning Leadoff Single and then 5 RBIs in his final two AB's ,,, including a huge 2nd 3-Run Big Fly of the day to break an 11-All Tie.

There were many contributions from Ryan's 5 hit, 3 RBI evening, to Larry, Juan, and Ricky each collecting 3 RBIs in game 2. The 35 Runs in Week 7's games is a Season 3 high. Keep it Rollin' OBI ,,, the Tourney is up next...

BTW,,, a reminder to bring you Season 4 $$ this week as next season fast approaches...

Double Post ... As Michael Returns from Vacation ...

OBI is currently searching for a backup plan in case Michael decides to go on vacation again anytime soon. Apparently, he is unable to perform his obligated OBI blog functions whilst wallowing away his own personal free time. Please fax resumes to 1-877-OBI-BLOG ,,, lol ...

That said, OBI has moved to 8-4 in season 3 after a week 5 sweep of Waste Management (11-1 and 19-5 run rules) and being swept in Week 6 by Aero FCU Skeleton Crew (18-17 and 10-7 losses).

Week 5 -- Waste Management was only able to push across 6 runs in 11 innings... The OBI defense had much to say about that.. Offensively, OBI scored 30 runs in 10+ innings while ringing up run rules in both games.

Offensive stars in week 5: Game 1 include Clint and Steve who both had 3 RBIs on a combined 5-5 hitting with a SF. KC also chipped in 3 hits and 2 Ribbies...

Game 2 stars abound with 19 runs scoring in our 6 at bats. Seven players picked up 3 hits each. Three players had four or more RBIs (Spillane with 6 and with 4 each, Ricky and DC) ...

Week 6 -- OBI led game one by a 13-4 count after 4 innings. However, the sun, wind, and rain,,, well, ok, the misting system in our dugout (by the way, Ryan no longer gets to choose the dugout we use based on his preferred playing position in the field lol) ,,, did us in...

Aero scored 5 and then a 9 spot to take an 18-16 lead going to the bottom of the 6th and final inning. The tying run died at third base as Nuta's looping liner to RC was snared to end the game. This 18-17 loss was tough however, DC shown bright as he took the field defensively for an inning along with a 4-4 2HR 8RBI performance...

Game Two was all about the defense for both teams during a slow moving 10-7 loss. KC broke out with a 3-4 4RBI game but the day belonged to his brother. DC collected a couple of doubles in another 4-4 game.

DC's total for the night,,, 8-8 at the plate with 3 doubles, 2 HRs, 4 runs scored, and 9 RBIs ... He has cemented his epic comeback player of the year type season ... Without DC,,, it is very safe to say that OBI is nowhere near 8 wins at any point this season...

Stats thru Week 6 follow:

OBI Splits a Pair of One-Run Affairs ...

This past Thursday was an Opposite Day. OBI Played a split doubleheader and won the back half instead of the standard front half going back several years,,, errr, I mean months ... This was an unfortunate happening as game 1 was lost to first place and now 8-0 BISP ...

Fortunate OBI scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th and final inning to take the second game 17-16 on Spillane's 2-out single... The loss-win combination leaves OBI 6-2 at the halfway point of Season 3 and in good position for a late season run as we look for an opportunity to play BISP again in the post-season tourney.

Well,, am now in paragraph three and it is probably time to mention our sponsor... Call A Awesome Painting for all you internal and external wall recoloring needs. (There Steve, mentioned you in the article) ... lol

Game 1's loss to BISP was especially painful given OBI took a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the third inning riding Larry's inside-the-park Grand Slam. BISP scored 4 and then 2 in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th innings respectfully, taking an 11-10 lead.

This held up as the final score as OBI was 2 for 12 after Larry's GS in the last 2 2/3 innings. Excellent defense helped hold down BISP including Spillane's catch of a line drive whilst heading back to the LC field wall.

Game 2 was highlighted by Steve-Os 2 Home Run game. His personal back-to-backs drove in 3 runs igniting the OBI offense. Juan made it for the late game and collected his first 3 hit game of 2013.

Though, most of the praise has to go to Matt as he took a called 3rd Strike to open the game winning 5-run inning. OBIers were definitely motivated by the impending beer purchase...

Following are the Season 3 stats (thru week 4) and the current YTD OBI stats:

Qualifying for Team Leader requires 2.0 Plate Appearances per Team Games

With a YTD update due out during Season 3's mid season arrival, am instituting a new rule for Team Leader designations on our stat sheets.

--> To qualify as a team leader during a Season or in YTD percentage statistics, the following qualification has been instituted: A player needs to have 2.0 Plate Appearances (PA) per Scheduled Team Game.

This value was calculate utilizing the following formula:

MLB PAs Required for Batting Title:  3.1 per Scheduled Team Game ...

PA has been adjusted down based upon Innings Per Game and Players In Lineup... Note that am estimating and average of 10.5 batters in the lineup per game as typically, we have either 10 or 11 batting. Also, I round the final Minimum PA value down by removing .0669 from the value as ,,, well, my reasoning is given below ...

MLB = 9 Innings
Softball = 7 Innings
Adjustment = .778  ( 7 / 9 )

MLB = 9 Batters in Lineup

Softball = 10.5 Batters in Lineup (Average Est.)
Adjustment = .857  ( 9 / 10.5 )

Minimum PAs calculated as 2.0669  ( 3.1 * .778 * .857 )

The Minimum PA value is rounded down to 2.0 since I didn't want to work with decimals ;~) ...

This qualification is up for discussion with anyone who cares to debate its merits ...

Heeeee's Baaaacckkk!!! DC leads OBI to sweep of We All Paid

Yes, David, you definitely have been missed. And OBI is happy you are not missing on your swings. DC's 5 for 6 performance included producing 44% of week 3's runs by launching 3 bombs, scoring 5 runs and driving in 6.

OBI had timely hits when they were needed and played excellent defense culminating in a game-saving, sliding catch by RF'er Ryan with 2 outs in game 2's bottom of the 7th inning...

There were several good plays made on hard hit balls. Defense definitely helped lead the way to OBI taking both games, 11-7 and then the 8-7 finale. This was OBI's first 2-0 week when hitting and on base pct. both were below .500... The team average was .478 and we had an on base pct. of .493 ...

Spillane also chipped in with 2 big flies. His first was a Game 1 bottom of the first inning blast that help us begin to erase We All Paid's 5 run top of first outburst. Chris' other shot was in the top of the 7th in Game 2, unfortunately, we were out of HRs as Dave had already maxed us out...

Larry pitched two excellent games, especially given he has about 15 stitches in his chin from this past weekend. In fact, after WAP scored 5 in the top of the first inning of Game 1,,, then they only scored 9 runs over their last 11 innings...

Looking towards Week 4, OBI plays a split double-header on Field 2. Games are vs. BISP (7:15) and Midlife Crisis (9:15) ... Mind your extracurricular activities between games my fellow OBI freaks ;~) ...

KC, DC, and now JC,,, OBI has a bunch of Initials on the Field...

For a second week in a row,,, OBI welcomed back an oldie but a goodie, as Juan Carlos (aka JC) returned to the playing field. His priorities have been set on family for the past 4+ months and we are more than happy to help him fix his Thursday Night attitude problem ...

On the field, OBI played hard yet proved that softball players should not play with guns... As we are very adept at shooting ourselves in the foot. The infield attempted to give away Game 1 vs. BMW Scottsdale. However, the OBI Offense was consistent throughout the game and a 15-9 victory was secured.

Game 2 was going swimmingly as OBI led AAA AZ 8-2 after two innings of play. Then, the wind shears started and the outfield opened the flood gates, the offense couldn't get around the dam,,, and AAA AZ began rolling enuf to take the game 13-10.

The OBI Offense was shut down from the 3rd thru 5th innings. Combined with our Defensive let down, cost us Game 2. However, the good news is ,,, the remainder of the schedule is out and we don't play Greenside Up during Season 3's Regular season (whew) ...

Offensively, it must be noted that we saw a huge increase in extra base hits this week. Two games combined we collected 11 Doubles, 4 Triples, and 1 Inside-the-Park Home Run ... The new OPS stat sent an email,,, needless to say, it is ecstatic about the production...

Again, welcome back to both Juan and David. We are very happy to see your faces once again on Thursdays...

Following are the stats thru Week 2:

Welcome Back, Craycraft !!!

As he steps into the batters box, the fielders instinctively move back towards the fence. The pitch arcs gracefully, dipping into the hitters wheelhouse, the ball already screaming noooooooo,,, as the batter smoothly swings his long unused hitting instrument of DESTRUCTION ...

Hitting in the cleanup spot in his first game back, David Craycraft evoked fear amongst the defense and brought smiles to each face in OBI's dugout. A crisp, clean 3-3 2RBI with a Double workmanlike performance was unexpected by only David. Welcome Back, my friend...

OBI was efficient on offense and played well enough defensively to pull off a doubleheader sweep of Mammas Boys with two 2-run wins, 13-11 and an amazing 5-3 victory. Though not as windy as anticipated, the breeze did affect the balls flight on the big #5 field. Interestingly, the wind was actually blowing out to CF,,, sooooooo, not sure exactly why there was no offensive explosion.

The most interesting happening on the field all night was ,,, well, which way the call would go... The Blue was consistently inconsistent, and that is putting it mildly. At least both teams saw the humor in the situation. Something that would never happen in D1 ... LOL

A new offensive category has been added to the stat sheet, OPS. This is OnBasePct + SluggingPct. Prior to officially adding the stat, I researched and calculate that an Average OPS for slowpitch softball is 1.300. Currently, our team average is 1.325, thus, I feel that the research is accurate enough to replace the SB category with OPS ...

There are 7 OBI players currently above 1.300 during 2013. Here is the list ...

1.843 Juan Reynoso
1.559 KC
1.530 Michael
1.500 David
1.447 Chris Nuta
1.400 Chris Spillane
1.326 Clint

Ok, fingers are tired of typing,,, here are the week 1 stats for Season 3. I still find it hard to believe, but yes,,, we scored 18 totals runs last night and are 2-0. Nicely done, OBI !!!

Season 3 is upon us ... (Schedule Change: 7:15 & 8:15 on Field 5)

One week after an 8th Place finish in the Season 2 Tourney, OBI opens Season 3 play with a split doubleheader on Field 1. Games this week are at 7:15 and 9:15 versus Mammas Boys and Aero FCU Skeleton Crew, respectively ...

There are three (3) new teams that have joined the Thursday night D1 division. Thus, OBI will play Season 3 back in good ol' D2 ... This is a good fit with Juan Carlos and David both rejoining the team this season (no specific reason given by the author of this post).

There is a link to Season 3's schedule and standings in the upper right corner of the blog. Currently, only this weeks games are available. However, the link is enabled for your viewing pleasure ...

C'Ya Thursday !!!

Offense Takes Tourney Night Off !!!

In an unexpected twist of fate, One Bad Inning's Offense was a no show at Season 2's Tourney Night. The OBI Defense was solid but not dense enough to avoid the Black Hole type Offensive display ...

Enough waxing philosophical,,, 2013 Season 2 was OBI's first in D1 in quite some time. The squad battled hard all season and finished 5-8-1 in the regular season, good for 6th Place in the 9 team D1 lineup. This will most likely keep us in D1 for a few more seasons.

** Season 2 OBI Player of the Season: Chris Nuta ...  Chris was not just consistent the entire season, he rocked his way back to the top of the order while sporting a full season .775 Batting Average. He also lead OBI in Hits, Runs Scored, Times on Base, and On Base Pct ... Excellent Effort, Chris !!! **

We wish a temporary farewell to 3 players as Season 2 comes to a close. Borracho Juan, J.R. and Humberto will not be returning in Season 3. All three have been extremely valuable filling in for missing OBI puzzle pieces.

To fill out the 12 player roster, returning in Season 3 are both Juan Carlos and David Craycraft ... No pressure guys but your fill ins rocked it,,, same is expected of you ;~)

Attached are the 2013 Season 2 Stats plus the 2013 YTD Stats ...

Season 2 Tourney Has Two Game Guarantee ...

One Bad Inning Earns #6 Seed in Season 2 D1 League Tourney ...

The 5-8-1 OBI squad enters the final week of season two as the Sixth overall seed (9 teams) and will face off against #3 seed Murphy's Law at 7:15pm on #6 ...
The winner will wait an hour then play two more games. Winning both is the goal,,, and it will be a challenge.

Losing the first game moves us to the 7th place game against the Loser of #7 Jaft vs. #9 Greenside Up. Personally, I like the two game guarantee but plan to battle hard in the 7:15 game two help earn us two more games...

Goooo Big O,,, errrr,,, OBI ...

The Thursday Night Championship Bracket can be downloaded via the link below ,,,

Week 7 Split Earns OBI the #6 Seed

Placing 6th of 9 teams in the first season returning to D1 is an excellent outcome. 5-8-1 One Bad Inning played extremely well at times throughout Season 2. OBI took a few beatings, however, imho have proven we belong ...

OBI opened the night with a 20-12 win over Jaft. The defensive display was good, but was topped by an offense that scored 13 in the third inning.

The middle of the order rocked, with the 3-8 holes going 18-22,,, and Michael made two of those outs... Matt was solid at 4-4, topped only by Spillane's 3-3 effort consisting of 3Runs and 6RBIs with a Double, SacFly, and a Big Fly !!! Ricky, Juan, and KC each had 3 hits ...

Game 2 saw OBI much less offensive and Jaft, well, Jaft was more offensive taking  the game 17-9 ...

More importantly, the defense good most of the season,,, remained solid even with the plethora of injured and missing folks. Juan filled in at short, as Michael filled in for Steve in left, who was filling in for Nuta who was not able to attend due to some other good reason. This one example is just that, one example of many great team efforts made that helped us secure the #6 seed in the Season 2 D1 Tourney ...

Tourney starts 7:15pm on Thursday, April 25th against Murphy's Law ...

McGlovin Outduels OBI in a Doubleheader Sweep

In our first look at 9-3 McGlovin, we were swept away by more consistent bats. In game 1, 4-7-1 OBI scored 10 runs,,, all in one inning. McGlovin pounded the rock consistenly and scored 3,4,5 runs and not just in Game 1, but throughout the two games.

Ok, Ok,,, enough about there exploits... What about us ?!?!?!!!!

OBI hitting leaders in Game were few and far between... Only 5 of our 13 hitters reached base twice. Three of the 5 were hitters 2-4 ,,, Nuta, Clint and KC ...

Game 2 was a completely different story ... We scored early, often, though not a lot. 7 total runs scored in the first 3 innings, and then, we were done... We took it on the chin 17-7 in a run rule... Hitting star was JR with his 3-3 with a Double and a Triple (broken ankle much?) ...

We will miss Chris Nuta this week as he continues to be the hottest hitter on the squad in Season 2. His 4-5 effort this week barely raised his average,,, slacker ...

Continue the excellent defensive effort, OBI ,,, and let's refocus our offensive effort on more productive at bats ... This was the first week in 2013 where as a team we were not on base more than 50% of the at bats ...
